According to ESPN, James Kirkland is gong to replace Paul Williams who suffered a devasating and career-ending spinal injury, in the fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. They will be fighting for the WBC junior middleweight title.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer comments on Canelo Alvarez when he was told the news of his injuries.
“Canelo was very saddened. He couldn’t believe it and was in shock. God-permitting and health-permitting Canelo told me he would like to invite Paul to be ringside but we don’t know if it is going to be feasible. But Canelo was really shaken up. He was speechless. We had to explain what happened a couple of times. It was a nice gesture for him to offer to fly Paul and his family out for the fight. Canelo believes Paul will always be fighter and a champion and he told me he is going to dedicate the fight to Paul Williams.”
In my opinion, what happened to Paul Williams was tragic and it’s nice to hear Canelo show him compassion and respect. I also think this new fight card is a really great opportunity for Alvarez and Kirkland to prove that they have what it takes to be amongst the top fighters in the fight game. It should be interesting.
What do you think about James Kirkland being the replacement?
